How we check a deal

The exact rules behind every verdict.

1. Find the car

We look the advert up in the dealer's live stock feed (Marketcheck, via One Auto API), reading up to 100 adverts from that dealer. That gives us the reg, asking price, mileage, postcode and days on sale. Private seller? You add the reg and postcode, and we work from those instead.

2. Price it locally

We request the fair market value for that reg at its current mileage, within a 50-mile radius of the car's postcode. It's built from comparable live and recently sold dealer listings (600k+ in the UK). If there is no local figure, we use the national one.

3. The verdict

Asking vs fair valueVerdict
More than 7% aboveOverpriced
Within ±7%Fair price
More than 7% belowGood deal

Example: asking £14,995 vs fair £13,650 is +9.9%, so it's overpriced by £1,345.

4. History

Dealer listings since 2022 (Marketcheck) and previous adverts with photos back to 2012 (Cazana). We flag mileage that goes down between adverts, and a car re-listed at a higher price.

5. If we can't

No car found, or no market value: automatic full refund.

Limits

Values are statistical estimates from adverts, not an inspection or an HPI check. Always see the car and check finance, write-off and MOT records too.
