Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a used car is overpriced?

Paste the link to the car's advert into Deal Check. We find the car, read its asking price and mileage, and compare it with the fair market value of the same make, model and mileage for sale within 50 miles of the seller and across the UK. You get a clear verdict, good deal, fair price or overpriced, with the difference in pounds so you know how much to negotiate. It costs £2.99 per car, with no account or subscription.

What is fair market value?

Fair market value is what comparable cars are actually advertised and selling for right now. It is built from live and recently sold dealer listings (more than 600,000 across the UK), adjusted for mileage. We show a local figure near the seller and a national figure, plus how many days similar cars typically take to sell.

Which car adverts can I check?

Most UK dealer adverts, including franchised and independent dealer websites. Private sales and some marketplace listings may not be in dealer stock feeds. If so, open "Private seller?" and add the registration and postcode, and we will price the car and find its advert history from the registration instead.

How is overpriced or a good deal decided?

If the asking price is more than 7% above fair market value, we mark it overpriced. More than 7% below is a good deal. Anything in between is a fair price. The report also shows the exact gap in pounds and percent, so you can make a confident, evidence-based offer.

Can I see a car's previous adverts and photos?

Yes. Where the car has been advertised before, you see each past advert with its date, asking price, mileage, seller and, where available, the photos and description. Advert history can go back as far as 2012. It is a useful way to spot mileage that does not add up, damage repaired since an earlier sale, or a car that changes hands unusually often.

Is this the same as an HPI or vehicle history check?

No. Deal Check focuses on price and advert history. It does not check outstanding finance, write-off status or theft. For those, use a full vehicle history check as well before you buy.

What if you cannot find the car?

If we cannot identify the car from your link, or cannot obtain a market value for it, you are refunded in full automatically. Refunds usually reach your card within 5 to 10 working days.

Do I need an account, and how do I get my report?

No account is needed. Pay as a guest by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Your report opens straight away and we email you a private link that keeps working for at least 12 months.
