Used car advert scams: red flags
If it feels too good to be true, check before you pay a penny.
- Price far below market: the classic lure.
- Deposit before viewing: never pay to "hold" a car you haven't seen.
- Photos that appear on older adverts with a different seller or plate.
- Seller "abroad" or "in the forces" offering delivery.
- Payment by bank transfer only, pushed urgently.
- V5C name or address doesn't match the seller or the viewing address.
- Mileage lower than in past adverts or MOTs.
- Reg hidden in every photo.
Protect yourself
View in person at the address on the V5C, check the MOT history free on gov.uk, compare past adverts, and pay by a traceable method.
