Auto Trader price indicator explained

A handy label, but only part of the story.

What it is

Auto Trader shows a label such as Great, Good, Fair or Higher price on many adverts. It compares the asking price with Auto Trader's own valuation of similar cars.

What it doesn't show

• The car's previous adverts, past prices and old photos.
• Whether the mileage matches earlier listings.
• How long the car has been on sale at other dealers.

How to double-check

Compare against an independent market value near the seller, then look at the car's history. Two sources that agree beat one label.
